Transformation 2020 – Step 3: Make a Declaration

Today is the day that you decide who you are and where you want to go. If you’ve been following along with the steps to transform your life in 2020, you reflected on the past year and reminded yourself of your values. Now it is time to turn those values into declarations.

Declarations allow us to direct our lives towards our values. By making a declaration, you are making a statement about who are you and who you intend to be. Declarations help guide your decision-making and your actions.

Yesterday, I told you the story about how I found myself being schooled by a toddler. My then-three-year-old daughter held up a mirror to the ugly parts of me and demanded I make changes.

It was a humbling experience, and one I reflect on often – particularly when those ugly parts of me show up. Since that time, I’ve been on a mission to improve my life, to be a better version of myself, and to shed the protective layers of ignorance, anger, and stubbornness that I’ve built up over the years.

To do this, I’ve had to redefine who I am and who I want to be. After examining my values a few years ago, I decided what was important to me and started to make decisions based on those values. While the subcategories under each value have shifted and transformed over the years, my values are still the same.

My Values

Compassion

Independence

Integrity

Loving Relationships

Health & Fitness

Personal Growth

Self-Acceptance

Community

I made declarations – to myself, at the time – about the type of woman I wanted to exemplify for my daughter and about the type of life I wanted to live. From those declarations, I have been able to reduce the clutter in my life – both physical and mental – and refocus my attention on what matters most to me.

My declarations of my values became my mission statement, my guiding light.

And so, today, the last day of 2019 – the last day of the decade – I am making a public declaration about who I am.

My Declaration

I am a compassionate woman who values integrity and independence. Through self-acceptance and personal growth, I intend to build a positive community complete with loving relationships. To care for myself, I strive to live a healthy lifestyle with a strong focus on fitness.
