It’s been real. But before we close the book on this crazy, upside down year, let’s take a moment to reflect.

I think we can all agree that it’s been quite the year. Nothing any of us could have possibly imagined. For some, the year was an opportunity to slow down, rediscover passions, and piece together a semblance of normalcy. For others, this year was an 18-wheeler steamrolling all facets of life; we’re lucky to still be standing. However you look at 2020, I think it is safe to say that we are all eager to turn the page and watch this year fade in the rear view.

But before you close the book on this year, I encourage you to reflect on the year past. Reflection plays an important role in our development as humans. When we learn from our experiences, we have a better understanding of who we are, and we can align ourselves with our goals more easily. Self-reflection is an important part to developing and honoring our values.

It would be easy to say that this year was horrible and move on to 2021. But doing so would minimize the experiences and lessons we’ve learned from 2020. Surly there was plenty to be learned this year.

Developing a self-reflection practice can take time, but it doesn’t take more than a piece of paper and a pen to get started.

Grab a journal – or a scrap piece of paper – and jot down answers to these questions:

  1. What were the toughest moments of 2020? What made these the toughest moments?
  2. What was your favorite moment of 2020? What made this moment your favorite?
  3. What are three things from 2020 are you most grateful for?
  4. What lessons are you bringing with you into 2021?
  5. What is something you are eager to leave behind?
